{"id":10183,"date":"2018-11-08T12:15:01","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T12:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astoryisnotatree.net\/?p=10183"},"modified":"2018-12-07T16:38:14","modified_gmt":"2018-12-07T16:38:14","slug":"art-from-code-a-response-to-georg-nees-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/r6g.ad7.mwp.accessdomain.com\/?p=10183","title":{"rendered":"Art from Code: A Response to Georg Nees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/astoryisnotatree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-08-at-6.56.45-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10182 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/astoryisnotatree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-08-at-6.56.45-AM-525x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Georg Nees began his work as a computer artist during a time of change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Computer artists were searching to establish themselves as something different.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Computer art was not merely a recreation, or a new imagining of some existing artistic method, It was its own medium, and computer artists were determined to prove that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Three of the people helping to establish computer art as its own medium at the time were Max Bense, one of the founding fathers of computational aesthetics, Georg Nees, a student of Bense, and Frieder Nake, another student of Bense.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All three artists utilized the theoretical model of informational aesthetics Bense created to simulate constructed objects and apply rules and functions to make randomized images no human could create.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This type of images was named a stochastic<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bense described this concept to Nees calling it the creation of artificial art.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bense considered computer art \u2018artificial art\u2019, as apposed to \u2018natural art\u2019, which included art created solely by human making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Artificial art is made through a mix of human and machine creation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For example, the stochastic procedures used in Nees\u2019s 23 Corner Graphic use random parameters and generative functions to create unique objects which can easily be altered, changed, and repeated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With a few basic rules, some guidelines, and a little instruction, together man and machine can make an original design which can be replicated across the entire canvas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The use of randomness also helps give some control to the computer making the machine\u2019s vital role in the creation even more noticeable and therefore more unique.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The variation within very strict parameters allows for a great deal of variation and change, and can be produced much more efficiently than if created naturally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> To respond to Nees was challenging.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wanted to create something, but something new.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I struggled to make something I saw as more than simply a recreation of existing work, but instead something unique; something random.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I began by experimenting with Nees\u2019s Boxes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I played with the parameters by changing sizes, rotations, and edges, I even created my own shape. I created integers for my rows, columns, rotation, speed, x axis, and x axis.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I made 39 rows, 20 columns, rotation equal to 0, speed equal to 0.001, and both x and y axis to 15.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I created a series of two for statements creating integer \u201ci\u201d to correspond to the number of rows and integer \u201cj\u201d to correspond to the number of columns.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I then declared x and y variables to make points on the x and y axis along the entire canvas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then created the rotation parameters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since I had already created a rotation variable, I was able to randomize my rotation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Next I set the rotation to change differently for each object depending on where it was spatially.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I then created a custom shape with 5 vertices.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Next, I created an array containing 3 different shades of gray.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Next, I added an additional for statement within the other two creating integer \u201cr\u201d which corresponds to my shades of gray.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then I added a line of code telling the computer to randomly select any of the 3 shades of gray.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Finally, I added the random fill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> I created my next images by focussing more on patterns then shapes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I made a white, 1000 x 1000 pixel background, set the stroke to black, and set the fill to white.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I created an array of ten different random integers up to 500 pixels, and a float angle equal to a random integer up to ten.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I then set the axis to be the middle of the canvas and created five rectangles 100 x 100 rectangles making their x and y axis the integers of the array.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This created an interesting pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/astoryisnotatree.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-08-at-6.56.15-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My final piece like the previous was focussed on patterns.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It had a similar 1000 x 1000, white background with a black stroke and a white fill.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Again I set the x and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">y axis to be in the center of the canvas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I then created a 7 x 1000 pixel ellipse, and had it rotate around the set x and y.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> <a \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is an<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">elegance to randomness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is one of the beauties of computer art.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This medium allows for the creation of shapes and images nearly impossible for the human hand to make.
